Get involved

If your child is with us all day, of course you are already involved with the school in the most important way you can be. Giving your child your support and taking an interest in their learning is a fantastic help to them and to the school.

We’re lucky that many of the parents and carers of children at Tufnell Park are able to get involved in other ways, too. Everyone’s busy, and we really do appreciate that. But whether it’s a occasional input, a one-off or a regular commitment, the whole school benefits when families and carers lend a hand. The children love it, too.

The clearest route to wider involvement in school life is through our Parent Teacher Association, or PTA. You can help out in any way you choose, from running a stall for half an hour (yes, please!) to organising and running a whole project yourself—with school approval, of course.

Large projects led by parents include the design and build of a previous website, and the transformation of the school playground – both huge, longterm undertakings. We’re in the process of formalising the use of parents’ skills in a designated Parent Skills Bank. Finding translators into some of the school’s many languages will be a major focus.  If you are interested in offering skills or expertise of any kind, please do contact us.

Our reading volunteers are also immensely important to school life. Every week, volunteers come into the school and read on a one-to-one basis with children from years 1–6. This is a regular commitment of one hour per week and is an incredible help to us and to the children. If you think this is something you could do, please get in touch.

Children in Reception visit the library once a week and parents help by accompanying the group. Whether you come once, occasionally or regularly, it’s always useful (and fun!).  Ask the teacher for more details.

Parents may also be needed to help on school trips. When your child’s teacher sends out their letter about the trip, they’ll make clear what their needs are in that instance.

Our after school club provision would not be the rich offering that it is without considerable involvement from parents over the years. If you’ve got a skill or enthusiasm you might volunteer to share, whether for a term or longer, do get in touch with our after schools Learning Co-ordinator.
