Pupil Voice

Our Intent

At Tufnell Park Primary School, we are committed as a whole-school to listen to the views, wishes and experiences of all our children. We respect and hold in the highest regard our pupil’s voice.

The School Council has been an effective vehicle for our children to voice their concerns and make change with the support of Senior Leadership Team. In the first term, we elect two representatives from each class. While these representatives will change every term, we do understand only a small number of pupils can get involved and some may find this type of formal engagement challenging. Therefore, we ensure there are regular class meetings to discuss the agenda for the next meetings to encourage all pupils to contribute within an environment comfortable to them.

We are developing a family group system where there are groups of children responsible for a diverse range of aspects of school life. For example, feedback on curriculum planning such as computing, playground facilities and dynamics, pupil well-being, and school approaches to bullying and behaviour. Consultation will have clear, published actions to increase trust that school staff are hearing the children and acting on their suggestions.

We are also in the process of finding ‘Faith Ambassadors’ in our KS1 classes. These young people will promote the positive values of faiths and non-faiths, build an interfaith dialogue and establish a genuine sense of community and tolerance. A Faith Ambassador may: Re-tell a special story, describe how they celebrate festivals or special events, talk about symbolic artefacts or clothing, share special artwork or food and help with school events and workshops. In addition, we will be relaunching our ‘Green Team’ as soon as possible. Climate change and pollution affect us all. It is up to everyone to do as much as they can to help the environment and we are eager to reflect this in our student voice too. It is vital to us that all children are included, which means overcoming language barriers, including younger or more vulnerable children, and those who may struggle to engage or enjoy school. We are committed to continuously reviewing and adapting what we have in place to ensure all children are heard.

By engaging our pupils in this way we aim to develop our pupils to become confident and resilient young people, with the experience and skills that allow them to lead independent lives within a modern world, and with the desire to be involved in society. They will be aware of their local and wider community, with an active interest in current affairs impacting education. They will be understanding of difference and tolerance, in accordance with the fundamental values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect.
