English: a statement of intent
At Tufnell Park, we believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s love of reading, writing and discussion. We aim to inspire an appreciation of a rich and varied literary heritage and a lifelong habit of reading widely and often. Our children come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, so it is critical we ensure they have access to rich and varied textual stimuli, exposing them to cultural, historical and social learning and inspiring them to read, comprehend and write, within their English lessons and across the curriculum. Our well-chosen texts and access to an extensive library support the development and understanding of a wide range of vocabulary, both technical and figurative.
We believe that a thorough grasp of literacy skills is crucial to a high quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society. We recognise the importance of cultivating a culture where children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts. We also want to inspire children to be confident in the arts of speaking and listening and who can use discussion to develop their learning.
Knowledge and skills are intrinsically linked in our approach to teaching English, ensuring a comprehensive grasp of literacy skills with a depth and breadth of understanding that will enable all our children to succeed now and in the future.
