Reading
Our aim is for all children at Tufnell Park to cultivate a life-long love of reading. We ensure that there are no missed opportunities to spark children’s enjoyment and interest.
Children at Tufnell Park are exposed to a wide range of high quality and diverse children’s literature across the school. This supports not only their reading comprehension but also broaden their world view. As a result, children are constantly exposed to rich language and are able to develop links across the curriculum and beyond.
Reading for Pleasure:
Reading for enjoyment is nurtured at Tufnell Park. As we believe it is an entitlement for every one of our children. We aim to inspire our children to explore, learn and grow, and make connections by giving them frequent opportunities to read widely. This is accomplished by:
- The Reading Road Map scheme which encourages children to read a range of texts across different genres which they may not have come across before.
- Having a fantastic library, full of both fiction and non-fiction texts, which children visit to take out books to read at home or in class.
Learning:
At Tufnell Park we have created a reading culture in the classrooms to promote whole class and group reading sessions:
- Reading happens daily
- Misconceptions are addressed quickly
- Reading strategies are modelled explicitly
- Vocabulary taught daily
- Children experience a range of text types
Reading at home:
Our emphasis for home reading is to support families and children in enjoying books together. Our Reading Journals (pictured below) were created not only as a record of reading at home but most importantly as a space for our children to reflect and evaluate the reading using fun and exciting activities. We aim to be thorough yet non-prescriptive in our suggestions: just as long as together, you pick up a book and read.
