Looking for a New PTA Chair

On 2 October, we will be looking for a new Chair of the Tufnell Park Primary School PTA. We will be holding a General Meeting earlier than our Annual General Meeting so that there is time to plan for the Panto and Winter Fair.

Below is an overview of the responsibilities of the Chair.

Strategy and school partnership

The Chair provides overall leadership and direction for the PTA. They work closely with the school, elected committee and core parent-volunteers to coordinate the PTA’s activities, identify priorities and help ensure that the time and money contributed by parents are translated into positive outcomes for the school and its children.

Working with the elected committee, core parent-volunteers and the school, the Chair helps define the PTA’s priorities and strategy for the year. This can include identifying funding priorities and potential projects, planning fundraising activities, seeking corporate sponsorship and helping coordinate the implementation of PTA-supported initiatives.

The Chair acts as an important point of contact between the PTA and the school, helping ensure that PTA activities and investments are aligned with the school’s priorities.

Fundraising and community events

Community events and fundraising are an important part of the PTA’s activities. Historically, the Chair has led the organising and coordination of the Winter Fair, Summer Fair and Fun Run. Last year, the school also hosted the Panto, with the PTA running the concessions.

The Chair works with parent-volunteers and school staff who are taking responsibility for different aspects of these events to help bring the overall programme together.

Governance and finances

Tufnell Park Primary School PTA is a registered charity and therefore requires appropriate governance and financial oversight.

Working closely with the Treasurer and other trustees, the Chair helps oversee the PTA’s finances and reviews and approves minor budget requests, including bursaries, the Science Fair, Black History Month and Smart Swap needs. For larger funding requests, the Chair works closely with the school, elected committee members and core parent-volunteers to consider priorities and agree how PTA funds should be allocated.

The Chair also helps ensure that the appropriate records and information are prepared for the AGM and annual regulatory filings.

Communications and resources

The Chair works closely with the Head of Communications to develop the PTA’s communications priorities for each term and ensure that parents and the wider school community are kept informed about PTA activities, events and opportunities to become involved.

The Chair also works closely with and supports the Head of Resources to ensure that the PTA has the equipment and materials needed for upcoming activities and that its existing resources are maintained and managed sustainably.

Building the PTA community

An important part of the Chair role is helping parents become involved in the PTA. The Chair works with committee members and core volunteers to identify opportunities for participation, connect volunteers with activities where they can contribute, and help build a strong and sustainable parent-volunteer community.

Agenda for the 2 October General Meeting

  1. Purpose of the meeting – Confirm the purpose of the General Meeting and that we will still hold our AGM in early November to review the annual budget and funding requests from the school.
  2. Winter Fair and Panto – Seek volunteers to help organise the Winter Fair and the PTA concessions at the Panto.
  3. Election of a new Chair – Vote on a new Chair of the PTA.
  4. Strategic Projects Lead – Vote on John Young’s proposed role change to Strategic Projects Lead.
  5. PTA and committee structure – Discuss whether there is an appetite for developing clearer terms of reference covering what it means to be a member of the elected committee, what it means to be part of the wider PTA, and the distinction between those roles and volunteering at individual activities or events.
  6. Volunteer roles and teams – Time permitting, seek volunteers for:
    • the school library;
    • the Resources Team;
    • parent-led technology initiatives;
