Geography

Our Intent

A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.  As they learn about different people and places around the world, they should grow increasingly tolerant and respectful of difference.

At Tufnell Park, we believe pupils should be given opportunities for practical learning with a strong emphasis on the outdoors and the natural environment.  As they progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

In addition, and of increasing importance, is an understanding of human impact on the natural world. In the current context of global climate change, it is vital that we equip our pupils with the knowledge and understanding to take growing responsibility for their use of resources, and for the choices they make. We also aim to give them the confidence to challenge unsustainable practices, and the creativity to devise possible solutions to the world’s problems.

Implementation

Geography is taught through units of work that wherever possible have cross-curricular links with literacy, science, art and design and technology topics being taught that term. There are three dedicated units of work for each year group across an academic year covering different aspects of the geography curriculum.

Knowledge organisers are a summary of the key facts and essential knowledge that pupils need about a unit of work or a curriculum subject. Advance organisers are an outline of the key learning children will encounter throughout a unit of work.
