Week Beginning Monday, March 23rd

Book of the Week

Our Book of the Week this week is: Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. (You can view the book here.) I really love this book because it not only does it have a great twist but it also teaches children about the idea of metamorphoses! For activities linked to this book click here.

Read this book with your child every day – making sure they repeat key phrases of it or even the whole book, and by the end of the week they will almost know it off by heart!

Song of the Week

Easter is fast approaching, so this week we will be learning a classic song: Hot Cross Buns. On Monday and Tuesday sing this song to your child across the day. From Wednesday get them to sing one line at a time. On Thursday and Friday get them to sing more and more lines together. By the end of Friday they will be able to sing the song all by themselves (fingers crossed!) You can find the lyrics to Hot Cross Buns here.

Letters and Sounds (Learning to Read and Write)

We have now learnt all the sounds in Phase 2 and Phase 3 of Letters and Sounds (the is the government scheme we use to teach phonics which you can access here).

But it is important that we practice them everyday. Here is the menomic that I sent home earlier in the year. Please practice these everyday with your adult.

Up until Easter we will be practicing reading and writing questions and sentences. Each day via Class Dojo I will send out 3 questions or sentences to be both read and written. Please try to read them before you try to write them. Once you’ve written them get your adult to write them down as well and copy these so that everyone gets to correctly write the questions or sentences at least once.

Everyday

To help your child continue to learn it would be great if the above activities could be done everyday. At school we would spend a maximum of 20 minutes doing each activity, separating each one by time where children get to choose what they would like to play with. Also, remember that we all learn best when we are having fun!

Finally

Do look out for our daily activities that we’ll send out via Class Dojo. (If you haven’t registered yet, please check your e-mails for the invitation.) Take care of each other.
